The Story:
Nicknamed the White City, Popayán is
a beautiful colonial town of white-washed houses and grand
churches encircled by rolling green hills. It is the capital
of the Cauca region and the former capital of Southern Colombia.
As a relaxed, safe, and an inexpensive town, it is a destination
for many backpackers travelling through Colombia.
Popayán began as a town populated by native Indians.
Even today, there exists a huge mound built by the Indians
similar to a pyramid. In 1537, Conquistadore Spanish conqueror
Sebastian de Belalcázar claimed Popayán for
Spain.
Because of its strategic location between Lima, Quito and
Cartagena, Popayán was a very important town during
colonial times as an obligatory stop for travelers. As a
traditional transfer point of gold and riches going to Cartagena
on its way to Spain, Popayán is a classic Colombian
town rich in Colonial architecture.
The Dilworth Colombia Popayán is grown at the foot
of the Purace volcano, one of the most active in Colombia.
The unique conditions of great soil and the climate of cool
and rainy weather give rise to a coffee that is bursting
with ripe fruit and sweet acidity.
