The Story:
Apurimac is a large mountainous inland region
of Peru, and the Apurimac River is the source of the Amazon
River. This picturesque river valley unites the two growing
regions of Ayacucho and Cuzco. The beans are grown at high
elevations, which creates a coffee with a bright acidity.
The town of San Francisco lies directly on the Apurimac
River and spans a bridge connecting the two regions. San
Francisco is the home of CACVRAs main offices, cocoa
receiving warehouse, and coffee cupping facility. CACVRA,
or Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera Valle Rio Apurimac, was
established in 1969 as a means of uniting cocoa and coffee
growers in the Apurimac River Valley.
Peru has done an outstanding job of embracing organic coffee
practices and becoming certified as such. This is a daunting
task. Today, Peru is the world's largest organic coffee
growing producer. Coffees from CACVRA are organically grown
on very small farms by producers who take great pride in
their work. Most farms have their own small washing station
and drying patios, and the cooperative employs several technicians
who are constantly visiting and working with the farmers
to ensure quality and consistency.
