The Story:
Ethiopia is known as the birthplace of coffee,
where, long ago, a shepherd witnessed his goats acting perky
and giddy after eating the fruit of coffee trees. He tried
the fruit for himself, and coffee was discovered.
Ethiopia is also the only place on earth where
native coffee varieties grow wild. The coffee there is constantly
regenerating into new varieties, and, therefore, it is home
to more genetic diversity in coffee than the rest of the
producing countries combined. There are many coffee sub-species
there that have yet to be classified.
In Yirgacheffe, the coffee trees have spent
many years evolving to become perfectly adapted to it's
micro-climate. Coffee is also deeply ingrained into the
culture of Ethiopia. Many Ethiopians drink coffee morning,
day and night, and in ceremonies, griniding it by mortar
and pestle, and roasting at homes in pans over fires.
