The Story:
Sumatran coffees are some of the smoothest
and most complex coffees in the world, with rich flavor,
very full body and a vibrant, low-key acidity. Beans from
Sumatra also have a distinct appearance - when green, they
are often asymmetrical in shape and have a deep aquamarine
tint. Beginning in the 18th Century when the popularity
of Sumatran coffee rose significantly, the unique shape
and hue helped European merchants recognize authentic Sumatran
coffee beans.
However, Sumatran coffees distinct flavor and appearance
isnt the only factor contributing to the coffees
uniqueness. The unusual drying techniques employed by Sumatran
coffee farmers also contribute to the coffees distinctiveness.
These techniques involve an extended period of the coffee
beans exposure to the pulp of the berry after the
berry has been harvesteda process which is believed
to produce deeper tones in the brewed coffee.
The aging of Sumatran green coffee beans enhances the earthy
and spicy notes of the coffee, making it one of the most
sought after coffees available.
Blue Batak is named in honor of the Batak people who cultivate
this coffee in the Lintong district.
