The Story:
The San Jose Ocaña farm was founded
from an original land grant of 1623. Cornelio Lazo Arreaga
purchased it in the 19th century, and his family has produced
coffee there for 5 generations.
At San José Ocaña, owners promote
good relations with workers. In the middle of last century,
they donated land (about 5 CABALLERIAS) for people working
on the farm and they founded what is now Santa Fe Ocaña
county.
A highly sought-after coffee, San Jose Ocaña
was awarded by Illy Cafe for its focus on quality. The farm
won #2 spot in the 2007 Guatemala Cup of Excellence. (They
didn't have any excess coffee to enter a lot in '08 or '09).
Visual controls, as well as humidity, fermentation, and
drying measurements are all part of a daily routine.
The coffee is grown at an altitude of up to
1900 meters, which produces a small, dense bean with lively
acidity.
