The Story:
All of Panama's small coffee production takes
place on the Pacific side of the mountain chain near Costa
Rica, to the west. Its most prized coffees are grown on
the western and eastern sides (facing the Pacific) of the
dominant 11,000 foot high Volcan Baru where coffee is grown
at elevations of 3,500 feet to nearly 6,000 feet. With winds
and rain coming from both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans,
growing condition can be difficult and unpredictable.
Panama is a small producer of coffee compared
to other countries, but their coffees have lately become
highly prized. Panama's most-renowned coffee, "Esmeralda
Special" from Hacienda La Esmeralda, has regularly
commanded the highest price of any coffee in the world in
recent lot auctions, and has sold for as much as $15/cup.
Carlos Aguilera and his family run Carmen
Estate, and they are known as one of the most distinguished
of Panama's many fine coffee farms. they consistently produce
excellent coffees, and placed 7th in the SCAA Cupping Pavilion
and 5th at the 2007 Best of Panama competition.
The 1750 Reserve is a micro-lot coffee grown
at the very high altitude (for coffee) of 6,000+ feet. PT's
Coffee is able to buy the coffee through their Direct Trade
relationship with Carmen Estate.
