The Story:
Colombia is the world's 3rd largest coffee-producing
country after Brazil and Vietnam. With the help of Juan
Valdez, they have done a great job of marketing their coffee
in the US, and, subsequently, Colombian coffee has the deserved
reputation in the US of being "Good" coffee. It
is generally a balanced and well-rounded, yet sometimes
boring coffee, and it can often be found in cheap supermarket
blends.
Some of it is very good, however.
Pitalito comes from a highly respected growing
area east of the Andes in the southern Colombian Department
of Huila. It is situated in the center of a rich plateau
between two mountain ranges at 1,350 meters above sea level,
and the coffee is grown as high as 1,500 meters. The term
"Estate" may be a bit of a misnomer, as this coffee
comes from a community of small-holding growers - growers
who have benefited from a long-term, supportive relationship
with The Roasterie.
