The Story:
High up along the rugged terrain of the Mt
Elgon growing region of eastern Uganda a dedicated group
of over 5000 land holders has begun the fight to regain
Ugandas role as a key player in the African coffee
industry. Begun in 1999 the Sipi Falls Coffee Project is
a model of farmer re-education and innovation. Modern sustainable
farming practices have helped to dramatically increase yield
as well as quality.
Winston Churchill, inspired by the beauty
of the countryside, called Uganda the pearl of Africa.
Mt Elgon is an ancient volcano on the border with Kenya
believed to have once been the tallest mountain in Africa.
The steep slopes and cooler weather of the Mt Elgon growing
region make it a perfect coffee growing country for Arabica
coffee.
Bugisu is the name of the tribe that farms
the mountain, and Bugisu is one of the finest washed Arabica
specialty coffees in the world. The Sipi Falls Coffee Project
was begun in 1999 as a model of farmer re-education and
innovation for the 5000 small land holders in the area.
The whole family helps to pick the red cherries and dries
them in the sun before transporting them for sale on donkeys,
bicycles or baskets on the head. Modern sustainable farming
practices have helped to dramatically increase yield as
well as quality.
The coveted Bugisu AA has been hand-graded
two times for quality and consistency.
