The Story:
Over the years, coffees from El Salvador have suffered from
a poor reputation - mainly due to an unstable political
climate. With a handful of wealthy families controlling
the coffee farms, and the government controlling trade,
quality was not emphasized. With civil wars spawning a more
democratic society, smaller coffee farms and much higher-quality
coffee have begun to flourish recently.
Topéca Coffee has been family-owned
for almost 150 years, with two plantations, Finca El Manzano
and Finca Ayutepeque, totaling 300 acres. Both are located
on the slopes of the Santa Ana volcano. Santa Ana has been
the most prized coffee region of El Salvador, located in
the far west of the southern range. In 2005, the volcano
erupted (see image below), coating the area with ash and
reportedly shot out car-sized lava rocks and a flood of
boiling mud and water. For all its destructiveness, volcanic
activity does make for fertile soil.
The Santa Ana is a blend of heirloom Bourbon
and Typica varieties of Arabica coffees from the highest
point of the El Manzano plantation. It has the distinction
of being one of the world's only single-estate specialty
coffees to be hand cultivated from Seed-to-Cup. We grow
which are dramatically superior in cup quality.
